Dogan Erbahar, Prof.

Principle Investigator

Dogan Erbahar is a professor of condensed matter physics currently working in Dogus University. His expertise covers a broad spectrum of computational techniques ranging from ab initio calculations to molecular dynamics simulations as well as machine learning applications in condensed matter physics. He studies the electronic and the mechanical properties of materials using these methods. He is currently the leader of working group 1 of COST action CA21126 (Carbon molecular nanostructures in space - NanoSpace) and running a TUBITAK project about the tribological properties of twisted bilayer systems. He enjoys lecturing as much as research and has taken active role in nanoscience community of Turkey via organizing conferences as well as giving public talks and writing science articles for general public. His full CV can be viewed from here.

Dilara Ickecan, MSc

PhD Candidate

Dilara is a PhD candidate in Physics at Marmara University and has been a member of the Erbahar Lab since January 2021. Her research focuses on applying machine learning methods to understand the physical properties of two-dimensional systems. Her PhD thesis has been supported by TUBITAK BIDEP 2211-C National PhD Scholarship Program in the Priority Fields in Science and Technology and The Council of Higher Education (YOK,100/2000) PhD Scholarship Program. She received her undergraduate degree in Physics Education at Karadeniz Technical University in June 2014. During her undergraduate studies, she visited Prof. Dietrich R.T. Zahn's Laboratory at Chemnitz University of Technology, Chemnitz, Germany, as an Erasmus intern. She then earned her master's degree in Physics Department at Kırıkkale University, Turkey where she discovered her passion for the physical, mechanical, and electronic properties exhibited by graphene. Her master's thesis is about synthesis and characterization of graphene.

Eftal Gezer, BSc

MSc Student

Eftal is currently doing his master's in physics at Gebze Technical University's Department of Physics. He has been interested in research since his first year of undergraduate studies, with a principle that undergraduate studies cannot be limited to just coursework. His research interests include statistical SETI, ultraviolet radiation, Archean Earth conditions, fullerene astrobiology, and nanotribology. He is particularly interested in interdisciplinary effort and his research interests include astrobiology, SETI, quantum information, optics, particle physics, history and philosophy of science.

Since his first year of undergraduate, he has been seeking answers to fundamental questions about whether we are alone in the universe and how life originated. He has been specifically interested in the role of ultraviolet radiation in the origin of life, the possibilities of finding life and extraterrestrial intelligence beyond Earth, the biosignatures and signatures of extraterrestrial life, the collapse of extraterrestrial civilizations, and the explanation of the Fermi paradox. He is also interested in understanding the mechanisms of non-carbon based life.

Yunus Emre Okyayli, MSc

PhD Candidate

Yunus' academic journey commenced at a high school specializing in web programming. His profound interest in science then led him to pursue undergraduate studies in Physics and Biology at Istanbul University. Continuing his academic pursuit, he completed his master's degree with a focus on particle physics. Currently, he is undertaking doctoral research at Gebze Technical University under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Çetin Kılıç. His research is at the intersection of cutting-edge fields, encompassing machine learning, Density Functional Theory (DFT), and the exploration of two-dimensional magnetic materials.
